Enjoy – I’d Like Us To Be Remembered In Some Way
Wyatt Shears is one half of the incredible twin-brothers THE GARDEN – already known by all you attentive bushwah readers. THE GARDEN just released an cassette album with their noisy lo fi punk on Burger Records, but Wyatt also goes solo with his project ENJOY: he sticks to minimalistic, dark romantic new wavish lo fi, and you can get all his great 12 (!!) albums he released in the last 1,5 years (!!!) on his bandcamp for little, very well spend money! His latest is called “Interest” and just found it’s way into the net earlier this month (listen and buy here). Read the interview, grab the music, watch the lo-lol video!
ENJOY differs from the wavish punk sound of THE GARDEN – even if you use almost the same instrumentation (drums and bass, vocals and occasionally guitar). How does the creative process – songwriting, recording, playing live – differs in these projects? What’s the difference for you between doing THE GARDEN with your brother and being a solo artist with ENJOY?
Well, in Enjoy, I write everything myself. I then teach it to the live band and then we play it live! But in The Garden, Fletcher and I just step into the garage and just make up our own little parts. It’s all based around comfortability. We never make anything that doesn’t sound like us or that doesn’t feel right. And we can both sense when it doesn’t. I’d have to say that the main difference is the song writing. I literally do everything by myself in Enjoy.
You stick to a very minimalistic sound throughout your ENJOY albums, very much influeced by 80s new wave bands. How would you describe your special sound? What are your main influences?
The funny thing is that I’m not at all influenced by 80′s new wave. I’m actually not even a fan of 80′s new wave. The only bands that I have listened to that have inspired certain Enjoy songs are “Earth Wind and Fire” and “A Taste Of Honey”. I guess, if I had to put a label on Enjoy it’d be something along the lines of Catchy / Romance. For most of the songs anyway. Influence wise, maybe Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass or Grimes.
The Garden were invited by photographer and YSL creative director Hedi Slimane to walk the runway of the YSL’s show, you even got photographed in your home bei Slimane I guess? (Watch all the pics on Hedi Slimanes diary blog!) How did it come to this? What kind of experience was this for you?
The YSL experience was incredible. The Garden was playing a show at The Echoplex in LA and apparently someone saw us in the crowd and told someone else, who then emailed us. I think that’s how it went at least… Long story short is that we got a flight to Paris and did runway for Fashion week. We got incredibly lucky and we’re even more fortunate that there is more to come out of it!
You released 12 albums digitally in about 1,5 years through bandcamp – how did it come to this incredible amount of albums in this short term?
Well, one of my biggest pet peeves is when someone says they’re going to “put something out” or “release something” etc. etc., and it never happens. Basically my ideas keep flowing and I am so satisfied with the music that I am making, that I just keep wanting to make more. And that’s what happens!
Some of your Garden and Enjoy stuff is released on cassette only via Burger Records. Why is there a tape-comeback from quite a few labels and bands in todays digital times? What do you like about tapes?
I have no fascination with tapes to be honest. I like the way they turn out, and how professional they appear to be, but we are just going with the flow in this whole tape epidemic.
Are there plans to release ENJOY on CD or vinyl instead of digital distribution and tapes?
Yes! Enjoy has a second tape coming out on Burger Records and a 12 inch LP coming out in Japan on BIG LOVE records!! I also have another Burger Tape that is still out from the summertime.
Do you even record on analog equipment, like a 4 track recorder? Do you use any digital equipment?
For Enjoy and most of The Garden’s recordings (with the exception of the upcoming LP) what we use is simple. We use the first version of garageband and plug an M-Audio 2 track recorder into that. The only downside to this is having to do separate tracks and not playing at the same time. It was a drag at first, but we learned how to make it work.
What are your 5 favorite albums?
Hmm…. I wish Fletcher could answer this one with me. But he can’t, so I’ll do it by myself.
A Tribe Called Quest – The Low End Theory
Minutemen – Paranoid Time
Nu Sensae – TV, Death, and the Devil
Killing Joke – What’s THIS for!
Grimes – Visions
What do you want to achieve as a musician?
I’d like to put out a few more records. I’d really like to inspire people to take an influence that they have and make it their own. From what i’ve seen, a good number of bands tend to just take influences and they don’t change anything up. I’d like us to be remembered in some way.
What are you going to do next with ENJOY? What are your plans for 2013?
We have a lot planned with The Garden, but for Enjoy I have a few things! Enjoy is heading out on The SXSW tour with The Garden this year and I have a 12 inch LP coming out on Japan’s BIG LOVE records!
BIG THANKS FROM BUSHWAH!!
